Learn Arabic by Watching – Links for Audio-Visual Content in Arabic 

We made a compilation of links to animations, cartoons, TV shows, movies, documentaries and YouTube channels for students learning Arabic, and then put a short guide at the top. Enjoy!

Even though watching/listening exercises in Arabic are a bit neglected during the educational processes in Turkey, this type of exercises are a lot more important than the credit given to them. They carry a significant amount of place in the classic language education methods, and of course, the visuals which are preferred to be watched should be in a line with the students’ language levels.

Cartoons are perhaps the best choice for beginners. They contain a simpler language than the average and if you allocate enough time and make effort, they could help gain a habit in this exercise. In that case, cartoons like Avatar: The Last Airbender or Les Miserables could be good to begin with. After watching cartoons for at least 30-40 episodes and reaching the point where you can understand the language a bit more clearly, it is time for animated movies. At this stage, you may want to start with animations like Zootopia and Kung Fu Panda.

If the time passes and you become convinced that you are able to catch most of what has been said in cartoons and animations easily, we advise TV series with historical content as your next stop in this journey. It should be noted that the difficulty of these series might change from one to another. Again, for beginners, Sultan Baybars, Resurrection Ertugrul or Ahmad b. Hanbal might be all good choices. After your skill reaches another point here, you might want to watch the series Omar, facing the most difficult and beautiful language you would see.

So far, all you have seen was fictional content. Now it is time for some press language. Naturally, your preferences should be programs of discussion and talk, documentaries and so on. You could experience a little hardship at this point, because the press language in Arabic is a bit different from what you saw and is used in fictional content. However, do not worry; this could also be overcome with more practice and learning through the terminology. We recommend Bi-lā Hudūd of Al Jazeera as a good starting point in that stage.

It is important that you continue listening to Arabic daily and regularly.  The 20 minutes of videos that you watched at the beginning should become 40 or more minutes of movies or other content. The necessary thing here is that you like what you do as in any other activity. Therefore, when you  choose the visuals, it might be wise to consider what you are really interested in. Above are just suggestions that could potentially benefit you, not necessarily. So, you might change the channel if you do not like what you see.

As a note, it should be mentioned that there are no subtitles in any of the contents links of which are below. This might come frightening at first, yet it is the most efficient way to be exposed to the language.
